Dear CMC Family,

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." - Gandhi

As we welcome 2024, Gandhi's powerful message resonates deeply with our mission at the California Mathematics Council (CMC). 'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' It is a call to action, a poignant reminder that transformative change begins within us — within our actions, dedication, and unwavering commitment to shaping a future where every student not only grasps mathematics but thrives within its realms.

As we stand on the cusp of 2024, this quote takes on renewed significance. Reflecting deeply on the newly approved CA Mathematics Framework (CMF), the quote becomes a guiding beacon, lighting our path through the challenges that await us. It challenges us not to wait for change but to actively pursue it. Each of us, whether educator, leader, or advocate, holds the power to actualize the change we envision.

Stepping into the role of President on January 1, 2024, I am deeply honored and humbled by the responsibility entrusted to me. Working alongside you, our esteemed members, and the broader community dedicated to advancing mathematics education in California fills me with immense pride and determination.

Our mission is rooted in an unshakable belief: Every student possesses the inherent capacity to understand mathematics and thrive in its complexity. To achieve this, we remain committed to fostering mathematical competence and confidence through a rigorous, challenging, culturally relevant, and responsive curriculum that sets high standards for all.

The challenges ahead are evident, demanding our attention and resilience. The next few years will require a considerable effort to roll out the Mathematics Framework, evaluate and adopt instructional materials aligned with the CA Mathematics Framework, reimagine assessments, professional learning, and family engagement, and support every student to become a powerful user of mathematics. However, within these challenges lie opportunities for innovation, evolution, and the elevation of mathematical education standards in our state.

Our primary commitment is to promote professional activities that drive us toward excellence in teaching and learning mathematics. Our work involves a perpetual quest for improvement, embracing novel methodologies, and nurturing an environment that encourages educators to excel.

Communication stands as a cornerstone of our efforts. Engaging with educators, parents, the public, and legislative bodies remains paramount. We aim to address issues surrounding rigorous, challenging mathematics education at all levels by initiating dialogues and sharing insights. I invite you all to take the survey using this link: https://bit.ly/CMCsurvey4input. Your input is pivotal in crafting actions that amplify the voices of our membership and advocate for mathematics for everyone!

Diversity is not just a goal but a vital component of our vision. We remain resolute in our commitment to increasing the diversity of our membership and leadership in mathematics education. Embracing diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences enriches our collective understanding and empowers us to create more inclusive learning environments.

As we embark on this journey together, I emphasize the importance of hope and courage. Challenges may seem daunting, but they catalyze growth. It is during these times that our resolve and determination shine brightest. Let us draw strength from our shared vision and collective dedication to the cause.

Change often arrives veiled in uncertainty, yet the potential for transformation lies within that uncertainty. Let us embrace this new chapter with open minds and unwavering determination.

Together, we can surmount obstacles, pioneer new approaches, and inspire the next generation of mathematically competent and confident individuals.

In the spirit of collaboration and perseverance, let us forge ahead, united in our commitment to excellence in mathematics education. I am honored to lead alongside each of you, eagerly anticipating the strides we will make together in the coming year.

With much respect,

Ma Bernadette Andres-Salgarino, Ed.D., NBCT
