This exhibit celebrates the achievements of women whose contributions span centuries—from Hypatia in 5th-century Alexandria to Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the prestigious Fields Medal. Their stories remind us that women have always been significant participants in mathematics and that sharing their achievements can inspire all who aspire to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Margot Lee Shetterly's book, Hidden Figures, recounts the remarkable stories of Christine Darden, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan—four African-American women who served as “human computers” for NASA. In the face of significant discrimination, their expertise as mathematicians, data analysts, engineers, and computer programmers proved vital to the success of NASA's space missions. Their legacy stands as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of diversity in mathematics and science.

At the California Mathematics Council (CMC), we honor leaders like Dr. Jo Boaler, whose research on mathematical mindsets has transformed our understanding of students' potential in math; Dr. Maria Zavala, who has advanced equity-focused mathematics education through her work on culturally responsive teaching; Dr. Kari Kokka, whose research emphasizes social justice in mathematics education; and Dr. Rochelle Gutierrez, whose contributions highlight the importance of identity and power in math education.

We also recognize and celebrate the women leaders of the CMC State Board, past and current, who work tirelessly as volunteers to advance CMC's mission and vision. Their dedication, leadership, and passion are instrumental in promoting equity, excellence, and access in mathematics education for all students across California. Their efforts inspire us to continue our work towards a more inclusive and just mathematical community.

By recognizing the contributions of women in mathematics, we can build a more inclusive and diverse mathematical landscape for all. As we share these stories, we inspire young girls to see themselves as mathematicians and leaders in STEM fields.

Congratulations to CMC Central!

A heartfelt congratulations to CMC Central for hosting a successful conference with nearly 600 educators in attendance! Their theme, "Igniting Curiosity, Inspiring Student Brilliance," beautifully captures the essence of mathematics education. It is a powerful reminder of our collective impact when we design learning spaces that elevate students’ brilliance. We encourage educators to continue creating environments that foster curiosity, deepen understanding, and support every student's success in mathematics.

📢 Call for Nominations!

We are excited to announce that nominations for the office of State and Sections will open on March 10, 2025. This is a valuable opportunity to help shape the future of mathematics education and advocacy within the CMC community.

If you know a CMC member who demonstrates exceptional leadership, activism, and a commitment to equity in mathematics—or if you would like to nominate yourself—please submit a nomination! The Nominations and Elections Committee looks forward to learning about each nominee’s contributions and vision for the future of CMC.

Self-nominations are encouraged. Nominees must be CMC members in good standing for at least one year prior to March 10, 2025. All nominations must be submitted by June 15, 2025.
