Dear CMC Family,

As we near the close of another year, we take a moment to reflect on all that we have accomplished together. This year has been one of growth, collaboration, and innovation as we worked to advance our organization's mission. I am proud that our community has come together to push boundaries and elevate the importance of equitable and joyful mathematics for every student.

Reflecting on 2024

In 2024, we reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring that all students access meaningful and empowering mathematical experiences regardless of background. Among the many highlights of this year were our annual conferences:

  • The CMC South Conference in Palm Springs, held on November 7–9, 2024, brought together over 2,500 educators and partners under the theme Shaping Our Future: Modernizing Mathematics Teaching. The conference was a dynamic gathering filled with inspiring keynotes, practical workshops, and meaningful conversations about the future of mathematics education.

  • The CMC North Conference in Asilomar, held on December 6–8, 2024, welcomed 1,250 educators and partners to explore the theme Framing Meaningful Mathematics. This gathering served as a powerful reminder of the importance of creating mathematical experiences that are relevant, engaging, and transformative for all students.

These conferences and countless other initiatives highlighted our community's collective passion and expertise and provided opportunities to share innovative practices, celebrate successes, and continue advocating for equitable and joyful mathematics.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we move into 2025, CMC is excited to announce that we have been awarded a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant. This funding will enable us to develop and implement messaging recommendations that build awareness among system- and building-level partners on the features of high-quality mathematics materials and aligned professional learning.

Our organization remains steadfast in its mission to promote professional activities that drive continual improvement and excellence in mathematics teaching and learning. We strive to:

  • Communicate effectively with educators, parents, the public, and legislative bodies about the importance of teaching rigorous and equitable mathematics.

  • Increase the diversity of our membership and leadership within mathematics education at local, state, and national levels.

  • Foster an inclusive environment where every student can thrive in their mathematical journeys, with particular attention to BIPOC students, multilingual learners, and students with learning differences.

This grant represents a pivotal step in expanding our reach and impact. By leveraging this support, we aim to enhance educational outcomes across California, ensuring that high-quality mathematics education is accessible to every student.

Immediate outcomes from these initiatives will include improving member support and communication methods through technological advancements. These improvements will expand the reach of messages about high-quality math instruction, ensuring our members are better equipped to advocate for and implement transformative practices in their classrooms and communities.

Gratitude and Hope

This season reminds us of the importance of gratitude and connection. I

want to thank each of you for your role in advancing our shared vision. Your

efforts inspire and empower students to see themselves as mathematicians

and problem-solvers, shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

On behalf of CMC's leadership team, I wish you a joyous holiday season

and a fulfilling start to the new year. May 2025 bring new opportunities to

learn, grow, and make a difference together.

With warmth and gratitude,

Ma Bernadette Andres-Salgarino, Ed.D., NBCT
